Concrete Leaf (Titanopsis calcarea) (Schwantes): Sometimes called Concrete Leaf or Jewel Plant, T. calcarea is a wild-looking mesemb or mimicry plant. It grows as a clump of blue-green, club-shaped leaves topped with bumpy, white warts.

It camouflages so well in its rocky habitats in South Africa and Namibia that it is often only found while in bloom. It produces shiny, yellow to orange, daisy-like flowers in fall and winter.

  • The flowers have a honey scent and are only open in the evenings.
  • Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost.
  • They need ample sunlight, good drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot.

Soft succulents will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures they can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light.

Pick containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with 50% to 70% mineral grit such as coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. Water deeply enough for water to run out the drainage hole, then wait for the soil to fully dry before watering again.
